Dear Mr. Deering,
I want to thank you for coming to our school. You are such an inspiration to me. I think it takes a lot of courage to come and speak to a big group of people like that. And even when people laughed at you a little, you still didn't care. I think what you said really made people stop and take in what you said. I agree with you that bullies are a big problem and that they should be handled. I believe that bullying is the wrong way to handle any situation and your words helped me to realize that. So you motivated me to help stop bullies and remove them from the school. In conclusion, I appreciate you coming and speaking at our school. You really helped a lot of kids.
Sincerely,
Alyssa L.

About Stuttering
BillDeering.Info
Stuttering has a tremendous impact on those that deal with it from day to day, month to month, and year to year. Many people stutter will NEVER choose an occupation where the main component is speaking. There is about 70 million people in the world that stutter or roughly 1 percent. How many people who stutter viewing this blog, are having a difficult time with their stutter? Are frustrated? Depressed? How many people who stutter, want to have their voice heard?

Bill Deering successfully gave a person who stutters a new way of looking at their stutter. So much so that this 29 year-old adult from India said "Bill, you altered my life and opened my eyes". That is the type of impact that Bill Deering creates for people who stutter as well as other groups of people.

If you really want to impact your stutter begin speaking more with others. Sometimes that can be very confronting depending on the severity of your stutter but the more you speak the freer you will become.

Fear of Stuttering
BillDeering.Info
Is stuttering something to fear? Bill Deering feared stuttering for many years. He didn't use the phone until he was 20 years-old. He refused to order food in a restaurant for many many years.
Stuttering is something to embrace. Stuttering is an advantage. For many people who stutter who read this are probably going to say "That is crazy. YOU don't know my life and what I have been through and what I go through on a daily basis. How can you say that"?
Here is the advantage: Have you ever noticed when you stutter people tend to listen to you more closely because they want to hear everything you are saying. That's your advantage! People don't get listened to in that way and people who stutter do!

About Stuttering

As the 2009-2010 Warren County Teacher of the Year, and as an educator for over thirty years, I can attest to the excellent presentation Mr. Bill Deering offered to our high school students, April 16, 2010. Our audience of almost 100 was inclusive of students who have autism and students who are physcially challenged, to College Prep English students and Theater Arts students. Mr. Deering stood before us in the library showcase as a testimony of perseverance and of overcoming challenges that anyone of us might face in school or outside of school.
He spoke from the heart about his challenges and how to look at failure as an opportunity to learn and/or to try another way; how to look at our own challenges and laugh and cry at them; how to keep getting up again and again; and how to self-reflect and to choose to go another way, to try another way when life throws difficulties our way.
It is important to note that Mr. Deering spoke to our high school students on a Friday, and the attached letters were voluntarily written by students the following Monday when upon entering their Study Skills class the teacher was asked, "Can we send Mr. Deering some letters?" I have attached their responses and let them serve as a sampling of the students themselves.
I would highly recommend Mr. Deering to tell his story of overcoming challenges. What was most powerful for me was after Bill was done speaking, a junior spoke before his peers and emotionally stated, "Hearing your story today has changed my life." That says it all!
A standing ovation from us to you, Bill!

Stuttering Disability
BillDeering.Info
Bill is one of those rare individuals who will not let the obstacles of life stop him from being a success in life. His experiences, throughout his life, has led him to this moment where his message needs to be heard by others who feel they might be alone or feel that whatever their disability might be it will prevent them from achieving their goals in life. Bill is an excellent role model who, at one time, was afraid to speak in public. He feared opening his mouth and he felt sometimes alone, but his positive thinking, determination, drive, inner strength, genuine decency, and desire to reach others with a positive message led him to where he is today; speaking all over the country talking about overcoming stuttering and how he like all of us, can do great things in life since we are all, in one way or another, dealing with what we call "the roadblocks of life". Bill's message is great for high school and college students plus professionals and student affairs staff who work every day with people with disabilities. I, like Bill, look at the person, not the disability. Each person has unique gifts and stuttering really helped Bill become the person he is today. He wants to make people aware of others who may be somewhat different from the norm, but productive in every way. Bill's message is enlightening and full of wonderful anecdotes that people can relate to.

How to deal with being a Stutterer in School
BillDeering.Info
Stuttering is a speech disorder and does not reflect on the intelligence of the Stutterer. Many famous people and some singers are also afflicted with stuttering and were able to stop stuttering. If you are one, or know someone who is, then perhaps this article can be helpful.
Steps you can take:
1. Learn about stuttering. Find the cause, how it can be controlled, and how to live with it. Understand that it doesn't reflect your intelligence or mean that you are stupid or disabled.
2. Make others realize that while you might stutter, you can still be friends. Stuttering is neither catching, nor makes you less fun to be with. Explain to them what you have learned about stuttering, and explain them about it.
3. Meeting new people can be made easier, by telling them right out, that you stutter. If they find out when you start to talk, they might not understand.
4. Learn how to control stuttering

Being a Stutterer
BillDeering.Info
Stuttering is nothing to be ashamed of. In my opinion, people who stutter are brilliant, resilent, and courageous. There is no reason to hide your stutter. Let stuttering be in the open so everyone can hear. When you go on an interview instead of hiding your stutter be upfront with the person interviewing you and tell them "I stutter and I want you to know this because when I get nervous or am in new situations I am very nervous. Please understand".

Teen Stuttering
BillDeering.Info
Stuttering as a teen can be very challenging. I would know I stuttered very severely. I didn't use the phone until I was 20 years-old. I got teased and bullied for my stutter. What made it better was reaching out to teachers, principals, and guidance counselors and friends. I stopped allowing myself to be bullied.
I speak all over the country to junior high, high school and college students empowering others to see that their limitations and fears do not have to stop them in life. Be it stuttering, stammering, being overweight, low self-esteem or any challenge you are dealing with.
